L+Z Rustic Kyogle Backyard Wedding
Lauren and Zane are the type of people that when you meet them, you feel like you’ve been friends for years. They’re genuine, warm, super happy people. Even though I only met them in person for the first time on their wedding day, it really felt like I was photographing a friend’s wedding. Photographing a Northern Rivers wedding is a bonus for me. As you'll see in the photos below, the scenery is just magic.
When Lauren described her and Zane’s wedding to me, she spoke of how it was all about family. She wanted me to capture the emotion and the closeness of the people at their wedding, because that was most important to them.
Lauren would get ready in town before heading to the wedding, which was held on their family farm, just outside of Kyogle. Kyogle is in the Northern Rivers, about an hour inland from where I live on the Tweed Coast. A beautiful place to get married, especially with all of the recent rain. The ceremony took place just behind the house under a beautiful arbour, which looked out over the hills.
Straight after the ceremony, we took a short drive to a place they described as ‘somewhere special’. Lauren had told me that they wanted to have their bridal photos down by the creek just near their property. It’s a place where they have been hanging out for years. I always say that if possible, you should have your wedding photos at a place that has significant meaning for the two of you. The short drive took us down a dirt road and over a wooden bridge. We pulled over, and followed Zane to a closed gate. The way he opened the dodgy wooden gate I could tell he had opened it many times before.
We’ve had so much rain in the Northern Rivers over the last month or so that the creek had a decent amount of water in it. Zane started taking his shoes off and looked at me as if I should do the same. If you told me before this Northern Rivers wedding, that I’d have bare feet, my jeans rolled up to my knees and be more than ankle deep in water walking through a creek and taking photos, I would not have believed you! It was definitely worth it though. This creek and the surrounding area was absolutely stunning. Normally I am the one that scouts locations for the best portrait spots, but sometimes the local’s knowledge is hard to beat.
We had champagne, plenty of laughs and a few photos. The bridal photos are one of my favourite parts of a wedding. It’s a great chance for the bride and groom to just take some time, chill out and hang together before heading back to the reception. I’m so happy with the images we made at the creek. They’re some of my favourite since I started my little photography gig.
Back at the reception, there was a pig on the spit, hilarious and heartfelt speeches and plenty of laughter.
All weddings are special and unique, but there was something about this one that I will remember for a long time. I think it goes back to how I felt when shooting - it felt like I was photographing a friend’s wedding. Perhaps I was.
